The Pole Vault
Frank Rock grew up in Santa Clarita and competed in track (Pole Vault, High Jump and Long Jump, at Placerita Jr. High and Hart High School. He set the school Record 14-0 at Hart in 1968. He placed 4th that year in CIF and 8th place at the California State Meet. Frank Majored in Police Science at Glendale College - Competed in Pole Vault (1969 and 1970). WSC Champion both years. School Record 1970 - 15'6"; 5th place Cal JC State Meet). Transferred to San Jose State University. Majored in Criminal Justice Administration - BS 1973. Competed In Pole Vault and Decathlon (16'6", 6394. PCAA Champion 1973.NCAA 5th place @ 16'0". AAU(now TAC) 6th place @16'6". Ranked 8th in the nation by T&F News for 1973. Competed in club track (Beverly Hills Striders and Maccabi Union) for 5 years. Cleared 17'0" @ 1974 MT. SAC RELAYS. Made the world list that year. Have coached track at COC, Boise State University and Burbank H/S before coming to Canyon in 1989. This is my 26th Cowboy team. I am married to my college sweetheart Carol (39 years) and have graduated 3 children from Canyon: Sarah '98; Kerry '00 and Casey Jane '05. I am a crew member at Trader Joe's and a chalk artist/muralist. My artwork is currently on many walls across the SCV. Frank is also a leading authority/lecturer on the history of the St. Francis Dam disaster of 1928.

Cornelius "Dutch" Warmerdam was the first vaulter to go over 15 feet. He did this in 1940 at UC Berkely,
while competing for Fresno State. He used a bamboo pole and landed in pile of sawdust, (like coach Broneer
